Who We Are
The first pilot Deep Recovery course was offered in 2018. In 2020, the program was expanded into the workbook-based course offered today. Since then, participants from a variety of backgrounds have engaged the course seeking recovery, spiritual renewal, emotional growth, and healthier patterns of living. Many participants report meaningful improvements in their personal lives, relationships, sense of purpose, and spiritual well-being, while also discovering supportive spiritual practices and a deeper understanding of God’s love and grace.
Deep Recovery is distinctive in its integration of Christian spiritual formation, neuroscience-informed education, and practical recovery principles. Each section of the course is intentionally designed to build upon the previous one, helping participants develop greater self-awareness, healthier relational patterns, emotional regulation skills, reflective practices, and supportive community connections. The course incorporates concepts drawn from habit formation, attachment theory, mindfulness and grounding practices, cognitive reframing, and Christian contemplative traditions within a faith-based and educational framework.
Drawing upon current understandings of neuroplasticity and behavioral change, Deep Recovery encourages participants to cultivate healthier habits, patterns of thought, emotional responses, and spiritual disciplines over time. The course is not clinical treatment or psychotherapy, but rather a structured, peer-supported process of spiritual growth, education, reflection, and personal transformation.
At its heart, Deep Recovery is centered on restoring relationship with God, self, and others. For many participants, this includes working through experiences of spiritual hurt, confusion, shame, isolation, or religious trauma within a compassionate and supportive Christian environment. Participants learn prayer practices, reflective exercises, and practical spiritual disciplines intended to foster peace, resilience, renewed meaning, and what we describe as “interior liberty” — the growing freedom to live with greater clarity, hope, stability, and love. Equally important, participants often discover healthier relationships, authentic community, and an ongoing path of spiritual renewal.

the course
Our courses are run by course leaders that have completed a 3-Day Intensive Training and follow the Deep Recovery Workbook. It is open to everyone, regardless of gender, faith or background.
Deep Recovery brings together the power of faith-based methods, informed by some of the latest neurobiology, and strengthened with effective tools that can be applied in your life.
Our unique approach covers a broad range of problems; from substance abuse and pornography addiction, to less obvious but prevalent conditions like anxiety and obsessive thinking. Few problems fall outside our approach.
Class sizes are relatively small and confidentiality is strictly enforced. Discussion is always present and forward focused, not focused on the past. Details about the details of events are not shared openly. In this way, the focus remains on moving forward and staying with the present, rather than revisiting and dwelling on the past.
Our focus is on developing skills to move forward and "rewire" new behaviors and thinking.

Before I started DR, I was lost, hopeless. I was stuck in self-destructive patterns of thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors. My whole sense of self was broken and my ego shattered. I was ready to end my life. I hit my knees and asked God to send me a life-line. I tried other recovery programs and methods and knew I needed something new and different. Deep Recovery was that lifeline that God gave me.
I would love to say the first time around, I gained control of it all. But I knew that I finally discovered something that started transformation at my core! It began a process, and now I have attended every 12-week course since 2021. First, I started to become aware of the false beliefs that were the "operating systems" of my life. Then I learned a number of tools that gave me back control over myself. I have gained some much needed healing and freedom from the thoughts and behaviors that kept me stuck for so long. I am beyond grateful to both God and Fr. Matthew. For the first time, I am truly proud of man I am becoming.

I was a recovery coach and case worker. I was a sponsor and had been in recovery from opiate addiction for years, but I was still unhappy, angry and my life was in chaos.
A friend recommended Deep Recovery. I saw the change in his life and thought that it could help me. By the fourth week I was blown away. I said, "Why didn't anyone teach this to me earlier!?"
The Deep Recovery transformed my life. It reintroduced me to God in a way that was kind and life-giving. I learned skills to manage my inner world, my thoughts and emotions, that I never had before. My relationships began to change. I gained real inner peace. And I decided that I wanted to teach this to others.
After attending the course two more times I has the privilege of teaching Deep Recovery to women in a long-term home for mothers in recovery. And it was amazing to hear how they had the same kind of experience.
Deep Recovery is awesome!

I’d moved to a new place, started a new job, and enrolled in a Master’s degree program at a nearby university. Although I’d wanted desperately to succeed in my plans, all the big changes were too much. My dark thoughts and anxiety were so overwhelming, that within weeks, I had quit my job and withdrew from the university. I was devastated, and the anxiety soon turned into a deep state of despair.
Fortunately, before I moved, I’d looked for a new church. When I discovered that there was a class for people dealing with mental health issues I decided to check it out.
The Deep Recovery program turned out to be just the right thing at the right time. My problems did not miraculously disappear. But as I started to feel relief from the worst symptoms, I discovered underlying themes and core beliefs that powered my anxiety and depression. A year since my first Deep Recovery class things are getting better.
A popular Christian song asks, “Have you come to the end of yourself?” When I found myself in the depths of despair, and I couldn’t put myself back together, I came to the end of myself. I asked myself what I really believe, and if it worked. God does work. Faith works. Deep Recovery works. Community works.
I heartily endorse the Deep Recovery program.
